Biography of Philippe Loubat
"I love it when painting surprises me; it is the painting that speaks to me; I am merely an observer. I let it take the lead, and I love that." — Philippe Loubat
Born in the early sixties in Montpellier, Philippe Loubat is driven by a boundless creative spirit. Early in his career, he chose painting from among several passions, including music, photography, and fashion design. For the past thirty years, he has devoted himself to it soul and body, letting his brush express his passions and his manifest taste for the beauty of life.
His work is featured in numerous private collections and exhibited in galleries and art fairs both in France and abroad (New York, Geneva, Ghent, The Hague, Monaco).
His art is also part of the permanent collection of the MAC (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Bahia, Brazil.
He has been commissioned by various organizations and companies to create posters for major events, such as the Internationales de la Guitare festival (for five years), the Nimagine fairs (for ten years), Arténîm (the first two editions), and I.D.A.T.E (the Institute for Audiovisual and Communications in Europe).
While his style has evolved over the years, several constants remain in his paintings: a strong aptitude for composition and a joy in working with color through an often playful palette, with a predilection for oil painting.
Certain themes recur regularly: love, human relationships, mythology, dreams, the circus, music, and art history. Deeply inspired by literature and cinema, it is not uncommon to find allusions to Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland), Haruki Murakami, Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, or Federico Fellini woven into his works, which viewers delight in deciphering.
If his paintings often seem autobiographical, it is because he absorbs everything he sees and experiences without labeling or analyzing it. He gently allows his subconscious to guide him across the canvas, painting almost instinctively. "I am like an explorer of emotions returning from a journey, recounting his adventures through his paintings," he says.
Looking at his work, one feels that he poetizes reality, softening it to make it more beautiful. Philippe Loubat notes: "We all create reality together. The media often broadcast troubling information. But reality can be entirely different if we wish. It can be romantic and poetic if we want it to be. I choose to create this kind of positive reality."
And if his characters often seem to float, it is because he paints their souls more than their physical forms.
